Woking v Stones: what a difference two years makes

Postby timfparks » Fri May 28, 2021 12:55 pm

May 2019, Kingsfield: Woking v Wealdstone , NLS play off semi final - huge game, our walking wounded off the back of that fabulous eliminator 3-1 win at Bath City and somehow taking a 2-0 lead into the break. Over 500 Stones fans in a 3,000 crowd. But it was 45 mins too far and we missed Northy big time as the Cards roared back to win.
May 2021: Laithwaite Community Stadium (as it’s now known): Woking v Wealdstone, perhaps the most pointless game in recent WFC history. We’ve had other games with nothing riding on it but never before have our fans not been allowed in to watch. Allied to a dismal last couple of months that have been little short of torture for everyone with Stones in their heart.
One to forget.
But as the Elmslie Ender column pointed out in last Saturday’s programme, the opposite of love is not hate, but indifference. Let’s show how strong that WFC heart is beating by returning with vigour, a renewed appetite and a plan next season.

A very memorable day in May ‘19. Never seen such an exhausted and gutted set of players. Our right back (pretty decent), his arms just hung limp at the final whistle, head bowed. They couldn’t have given more. The Northy assault cost us dear.

I really really hope June 21st changes everything - the masks, the distancing, away supporters and capacities, etc.

Be careful ..The Sri Lankan variant is potent and requires you to stand on one leg whilst singing Ave Marie.

You apparently must also watch old comedy shows off Hancocks half hour. Which should then give you immunity.

Just hope that is not running rampant on June 21st.

I don't think North missing cost us as much as you're saying.

We lost it in midfield with Smith having to go off early on and the others running on fumes.

Mark Scott being in goal didn't help but I'm not sure we'd have hung on even with North in goal.

Smith shouldn't have started, he was done. Fwiw, I think North, over the course of the match would have made the diff. We'll never know.

Anyway, a sigh of relief at 4:50pm, when this season is finished.

I am more looking forward to the pre-season games at Rayners Lane and Chesham United to be honest than this game at Woking.
Fingers crossed for a well-earned fighting draw.

If he hadn't we probably wouldn't have been 2-0 up to be having this discussion

To be honest until you'd mentioned it I hadn't even remembered there was a game today.

As for Rayners Lane and Chesham.

Not for me I'm afraid.
